Cambodian Beaches

Cambodia's touristic beaches are mainly in Sihanoukville ( 8 beaches ) and it's offshore islands. Some of the best beaches in Cambodia are at Koh Rong Samloem on the inner side as Saracen, which is in the meantime developed with 7 bungalow resorts, mostly owned by germans. Another beaches on the inner side of Koh Rong Samloem are not developed and on one beach development is in progress by the same owner which made Sok San Bungalows in Koh Rong. On the outer sunset front of Koh Rong Samloem there are just smaller beaches developed with 1 resort each. Saracen bay now has several tourboats going over as freedom, suntours, partyboat and others.

Cambodian Beaches - Koh Rong

Koh Rong got developed around the village, which is laid on the inner side as well. This beach is now developed with several resorts originally started by the diveshop which moved his dive base in 2008 from Koh Rong Samloem to another bigger island. Later other resorts followed> Most people are going to this beach, where the younger crowd is getting good fun and parties at nights. Most tourboats to this inner Koh Rong beach leave at Sihanoukville from the Royal Pier behind the port. The Koh Rong booking office is next to the golden lion circle, but several other offices are existing. Almost every single island resort has it's own booking office and leaves from another pier in city, what makes it a bit confusing probably for most visitors to find the right office and finally the right pier.

Cambodian Beaches - The ultimate

Now let's talk about the ultimate beach in Cambodia. When we are talking about beaches laid on the inner side of islands we are talking about water depth of 15m as well. And with a couple waves this is whirling up smaller particles, what makes the diving and snorkeling fun quite low. If you are the divers freak or like snorkeling right in front of your resort, the you have no other option than going to one of the outer beaches of Koh Rong Samloem or Koh Rong. And then we come soo to the beach, which is the absolute ultimate beach. Probably one of the ultimate beaches in the whole world. Sok San Bay. A 6km white sandy stretch as Saracen Bay, but with the difference that you got crystal clear water for snorkeling. In the meantime, there are 2 resorts at this beach but it will last a bit more and there will be a couple more.

Cambodian Beaches - The most secluded

The most secluded developed beach on a Cambodian island is 'Lonely Beach' at the northern part of Koh Rong. Dany, one of the most experienced westerner living in country made his first bungalow resort initially at M'Pay Bay ages ago. It was the first ever built bungalow resort on a Cambodian island. In 2011 he opened lonely beach bungalows.

Cambodian Beaches - Koh Rong...A dream island

Koh Rong is the ultimate dream island and there are plenty more ultimate beaches on the inner side. Undevelopped and pure nature. Most of the Cambodian islands are pure nature with just a handful pretty romantic bungalow resorts right on the beach and you won't find any street on a Cambodian island. It's absolutely unique in the world beside of Indonesia, but in 2007 there was a sold out of land and islands and all islands are sold to those investors will bring you up once in 10 years your Gucci shops and MC Donalds frenchises and build probably as everywhere else first a 4 lane highway right behind the dream beaches. But for the next 5-10 years until the big boys with too much money and plenty of lousy ideas will come, the beaches are still here and developped by people putting their heartblood into their resorts. Once the moment will come, where the big boys caterpillars will flatten it all down as it happened with plenty of places at Sihanoukville's Otres beach in 2010, but you got time left, to see real untouched islands and you can choose your dream beach. You got at least 5 years until MC Donalds frenchiser find out it need another crap right on the best beach.

Camboidan Beaches - Sand Flies

You got the best beach and trying to enjoy it....but....there is something anoying. Those guys often come from behind sticking with you and before you really know what happened it's itching like hell for days. All you can do is staying a bit back from the beach or if shallow waters walking as far outside as possible and dive, if one hooked up with you. Amazingly there are beaches having sandflies, another ones don't and we have to reasearch a bit more where this mess is coming from and chooses just the best beaches. Seems as those guys have a good taste :-) The sandflies beaches are:

  • Sihanoukville - Otres Beach: Impossible to get rid of them as the water is not shallow to walk further outside
  • Koh Rong Samloem - Saracen Beach: Shallow water and just walk 20m outside. They still follow you there, but not that many.
  • Koh Rong - Sok San Beach: We heard about, but have to investigate a bit more.
  • ...and maybe others we don't know yet...
